Dreaming of Better Days!

About a week ago my youngest Ben asked me if we won the lottery could he get a cell phone. I said I don’t know Ben maybe. Then came the would we get a bigger house? I told him I like our house. He said I know mom but if we won the lottery. Maybe Ben. Ben was dreaming  about the things  he thinks will make his life better.

Last year, when I thought our life was turned upside down. The depression, the I told you so’s and the feeling Lord I don’t think we can do it. A dear friend told me “Candy tell the Lord your dream’s” I told her I thought the Lord knew all my dreams and she said just do it and see what happens.

Through the struggles, Our family has really settled in and we are doing things I know a year ago wouldn’t be possible. I know others are feeling overwhelmed and discouraged right now but things will get better.

Randy got a new job and he starts Wednesday and the whole family is thrilled. My dreaming with the Lord has made me see what I thought was important in the past wasn’t where we were supposed to be and dreams really do come true. I am rich in family and have seen how our family came together to survive our business loss.  I thought  money and success would make us who we are, but  it really isn’t about that at all. Not that I don’t want to be successful but I was willing to scarifies my family time for the money and success now I can have both.  My grandma was right better days are coming!

Tell the Lord your dreams and see what happens, Candy

Organizing, Cleaning and Teenagers….oh my!

Like Dorothy and her friends afraid of Lions and tigers and bears I have been afraid to tackle my overwhelming summer project! I have been struggling with how to get myself and family organized. I wrote a little about it on Another Valuable Lesson and I thought maybe it would be a good thing to pursue it here.

I have my own cleaning business and I keep my schedule for work just fine, but our family schedule trying to keep 6 schedules is getting out of control and then keeping our home tidy while teenagers are home for the summer is another story. Sometimes I feel it is a losing battle if I am not on top of cleaning 24/7 it just goes downhill.

I found a site called Flylady and she has baby steps on how to stop the chaos in our lives step one clean and polish your sink. She has broken each area of her home into zones to attack each week along with some caring advice for those who go to her site  like drink your water.

I sometimes get overwhelmed when I look at the big picture and am trying to do one thing at time. example: My desk is a mess do one drawer and then if I can do another great if not try tomorrow. I think sometimes I am like the mechanic that can’t seem to get his car fixed.

I need to get all my paperwork, my home and schedule organized so I can start living. I would appreciate any ideas you may have to get me on the right track.

Today, I have emptied 3 boxes of paperwork from Randy’s old business and have put things in their appropriate files it feels great, but I am done for the day. Tomorrow, I will start again so I can click my heels and say “there’s no place like home!”

Have a great Sunday and God’s Blessings, Candy

In-Season Produce

Good Morning! I have been thinking about how we can save with all the fresh produce that is coming in-season. I have found a site that you can look up your state and see what is in season right now called sustainable table.

I grew up in the country and there was a U-Pick strawberry field. Picking strawberries are hard work, but when my mom made her strawberry jelly we had them the whole year. The strawberry signs have been calling me I need to get out to pick some before the season is over.

Canning is one way we can eat all of this great in-season produce. If you are new to canning. Here are some ideas where to find your supplies.

  • Garage sales
  • Goodwill or savers
  • Ask a friend and share
  • My dad gave me a huge box of jars and I haven’t had to buy jars yet.

The ring can be used again and again, but just make sure when you wash them and dry right away so they don’t rust. all you have to buy is the caps. Small mouth jars when opened and kept in the fridge a peanut butter lid fits nice and it is easier to open and close without the ring and lid.

I like to can with My can-can buddy. We harvest together and then can together and split our work it makes the time go faster and it is great to have help. My can-can buddy just moved back from a year away so I am thrilled.

Well some may say “I don’t have time to can” try freezing your fresh produce. You can use freezer bags or invest in containers that you can reuse. If you freeze your produce flat you can store more.

If we take the time now to look for the bargains while they are in stock we will be further ahead when they aren’t. I haven’t harvested anything out of my garden yet but it is just around the corner. I also wanted to tell you I am surprised the produce I get for free like apples, grapes, peaches and tomatoes. keep your ears open and you may find others that just can’t use all their produce and it is free for the picking.

If you aren’t able to find free, farmers and road side stand usually have great prices on the things we aren’t going in our garden and you are supporting our struggling farmers and the produce is fresher!

If you have tips let me know and I will share!

Have a blessed day!  Candy

Raising teenagers on a tight budget

As many of you know I have 4 teenagers (Ben will be one next month). It is hard raising teenagers on a tight budget, especially when those around your children seem to get all the latest fangled gadgets.

Lyndsey our 16 year old has been driving for a little while now, she drives our van. Her best friend got her license last week and that day the parents went out and bought her a car. I am trying not to have a poor me attitude I can’t afford a car at this time. Lyndsey and I have a plan and she is working now and is saving learning to have a budget and save for a car.

Lyndsey made Varsity Cheerleader and when we went to the meeting the coach said “Welcome to the most expensive sport your child will have in High school!” Now I believe it $268 camp this week and they have special clothes they wear each day and I haven’t received the bill yet for that but it is coming.

Our Boys, Jacob is 14 and Ben will be 13 next month They have been on us to get them a cell phone. “Everybody has them mom” . When I do pull up to the school I do see many with phones. Maybe next year for Jake he will be a freshman.

Kids today are different and I see parents giving and giving more. I don’t think my kids are suffering but it hard not to covet a little. Have you ever thought when kids get everything they want and more? When they get out on their own it is going to be tough wanting everything their parents have worked their whole life for.

Our children work to get the little extras they would like. I would love to give them whatever they would like but have realized they respect what they work for and earned. I also think our children seeing us budget for things will help them not get into financial stress when they are adults. Learning from the get – go how to budget!

God’s Blessings today, Candy

Happy Father’s Day!

Today is the day we celebrate our father’s. I have always called mine Dad. My dad was always the stern kind of guy and when I was a kid he gave you one look and you knew if it was a good thing you were doing or a bad thing you better quit right now.  Now my dad is a teddy bear and will always help me in my frugal journey making me a rain barrel, composter and a heat grabber.

My kids also have have a wonderful dad. All he asks for on father’s day is a clean house so he can relax. He has had a lot of change in the last year and he has adjusted and I am very proud of him. Yesterday we went to my dad’s to wish him a Happy Father’s Day. While there my mom said “You both are such good parents and I am so proud of you!” Randy mentioned it to me several times during the evening how wonderful it felt to hear my mom say that. I think that was a gift from my mom he will never forget. Today our Oldest is singing at church for her dad’s father’s day gift. Randy loves his faith and this will be the highlight of his day.  Happy Father’s Day to all Dad’s today!
